Looking for your net pair of goalkeeper gloves but don't know what to go for? Confused about the multiple types of 'cut' on the market? This guide tells you all you need to know.

What is a goalkeeper glove cut?

The GK glove 'cut' refers to the shape of the goalkeeper glove and how it fits your hand. Different goalkeepers like different types of fit. A straightforward example would be a tight-fitting glove, compared to a loose-fitting glove. But glove cuts are often more complicated than that.

Like fashion, glove cuts have different peaks in popularity throughout time. The Roll Finger cut was often the most popular glove cut in the 90's and 2000's. However a more modern approach to goalkeeping has led to a Negative cut glove becoming more popular

Roll-Finger

The roll finger cut is characterized by the way the latex foam on the palm wraps or rolls around the fingers, creating a seamless fit with maximum contact with the ball on the latex part of the glove.

More ball contact: The main benefit of the roll finger cut is typically the increased latex surface area on the fingers. This can enhance the goalkeeper's ability to make ball contact with a larger part of the latex palm, providing more grip.

Less dexterity: Roll Finger cuts offer less dexterity in the fingers. Due to the latex wrapping all the way around, the goalkeeper glove feels more mitt-like. However, many goalkeepers find this comfortable and reassuring.

Negative Cut

In a negative cut glove, the seams are stitched on the inside of the glove, providing a snug and tight fit around the fingers. This results in a more streamlined and sleek appearance compared to other cut styles.

Tight fit: The negative cut offers a tighter and more personalized fit, as the glove material is pulled inward, reducing any excess space around the fingers. This close fit is designed to enhance the goalkeeper's control and feel for the ball.

Improved Ball Control: The goalkeeper wearing a Negative Cut will 'feel' the ball more, and have increased finger movement. The fingers of the gloves have less empty space. The glove has increased in popularity due to it being a more lightweight feel, slicker look, and more like a second-skin. All of which correlates with the idea of a modern goalkeeper.

Hybrid Cut

What about a best of both?  hybrid cust goalkeeper gloves incorporates elements of both Roll Finger and Negative cut goalkeeper gloves, among others.

Every brand may have a different take on a Hybrid Cut, as the different elements can be applied in different ways. Brand may also give their hybrid cuts different names.

The gloveglu Hybrid Cut glove provides a fit like this:

Negative Cut fingers: The length of the fingers offer a negative cut feel, with stitching on the inside of the glove, providing a tight, snug feel with plenty of movement

Roll Finger Tips: The stitching ends at the fingertips, where the latex wrapps around the whole finger tip. This provides the benefit of the Roll Finger cut. The goalkeeper will have more ball contact with latex on the finger tips.

The result is a comfortable, snug fit which provides a great balance of snugness and ball contact.
